Encyclopedia of Arkansas logoThe Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture

"The mission of the Encyclopedia of Arkansas Project" (as stated on its Web site) "is to collect and disseminate information on all aspects of the state's history and culture and to provide a comprehensive reference work for historians, teachers, students and individuals for the purpose of promoting the study, understanding, and appreciation of Arkansas's heritage." The Encyclopedia is maintained and updated by staff from the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

No complete index exists for this newspaper. Print indexes for selected years of the newspaper are located on the second floor. A special index was created by the staff of the Arkansas Tech University Pendergraft Library for the Little Rock school integration issue and covers the years: 1957, 1994-1999. Full-text from 1984 to present is available through the Lexis Nexis Academic database. Requests for photocopies can be made through ILLIAD interlibrary loan.

All newspapers are available in microfilm format and are housed in the Pebley Historical and Cultural Center, Room 106. Microfilm of The Southwest Times Record is located on the second floor.

Pebley Center

The Olive, Kathleen and Rosa Belle A. Pebley Historical And Cultural Center Collection was established in 2003 and focuses primarily on the early history of Fort Smith and the immediate surrounding counties. The collection, located in Room 106 of the Boreham Library, is non-circulating and may be used by the public as well as the University community.

This is the official site of the Fort Smith Historical Society. Organized in 1977, the Society seeks to preserve written and oral history of the Fort Smith area. The Journal, the Society's award-winning publication, is completely indexed and published in April and September.


Fort Smith Historical Society Journal

Digitized issues of The Journal from v.1, 1977 on. The Journal is produced and owned by the Fort Smith Historical Society. UA Fort Smith and Boreham Library host the online version as a free service to the community.


Fort Smith Regional Index
